Set up AI search
AI search is optional. It suggests the passage that supports each statement, so you don't have to find it yourself. You can check and decide every finding without it.
Two ways to run it
| Topic | Your own API key | RefPack-funded searches |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | OpenAI, or an Azure OpenAI endpoint | OpenAI |
| Route | Straight from your computer to your provider | From your computer through RefPack's relay to the provider |
| Files at the provider | PDFs travel inside each request. No file is stored with the provider. | Any file stored with the provider for a check expires within 24 hours and is deleted after the check. |
| Retention | Your agreement with your provider applies. | The provider's API data policy applies. The relay does not store your documents. |
What is sent
An AI search sends:
- the selected reference PDFs,
- the cited statements, as they read in Review,
- the check instructions.
Your manuscript file, your decisions and your notes stay on your computer. Findings without a PDF are skipped.
Nothing is sent until you start an AI search in Review. Before anything is sent, RefPack shows what will be sent, where it goes, an estimated cost and a maximum, and asks you to confirm. The search stops before it goes over that maximum.
Use your own API key
- In RefPack, open Settings and choose AI and data.
- Add your OpenAI API key and save it. The desktop app keeps the key on your computer.
- Test the key. The page shows the provider and the address your searches go to.
- Open a project in Review and choose Find evidence.
To use an Azure OpenAI endpoint instead, write to support@refpack.io for the setup steps. Don't put your key in the email.
Use RefPack-funded searches
On a plan with RefPack-funded searches you don't need an API key. Searches go from your computer through RefPack's relay to the provider. The relay passes the request on and does not store your documents.
Retention and training
The provider's retention policy applies to what you send. OpenAI states that data sent through its API is not used to train its models by default. Read OpenAI's enterprise privacy page for the current terms. With an Azure OpenAI endpoint, your agreement with Microsoft applies.
Keep a project or a reference out of AI search
In Prepare, under References, each project has an AI checks setting: Off, Allowed or Allowed except marked references. Mark a reference Do not send to AI, and the findings that cite it are not sent.
